Creation process step-by-step: [link]
---
The improved walk style of the Lopunny walk cycle. Lots of motion guides, I wanted to animate the motion first so I could focus more on the anatomy during the sketch and lineart (a lot of room for improvement on the anatomy though, hands and feet are still my greatest enemies). I will be using this animation as base for a character animation and release the base source with it. Used mirroring for this one as well.

Nice movement, though the thighs should overlap the pelvis as they come forward. I'd also put some more drag on the fingers as the hands move back; might as well go all out! Already much improved from the original!

Ah I see what you mean, when I was animating the pelvis I was thinking too much about getting the proportions right that forgot about their actual position, thanks for pointing it out! And I will be checking the hands too, now with reference :D Thanks again!

Nice job overall, I'm impressed.

Just a little note... the hands/arms seem a bit off.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff88up… <--reference of real models.

Model hands don't flop. The hands stay in the same pose.

The arms are also moving slightly unnaturally as well.

Models also have a tendency on the catwalk to thrust their chest a little because most of the cameras are below them, so they look like they are leaning back when you look at them from the side.

I had the feeling that the arms didn't look natural, but I didn't realize it until I was finishing the lineart. Thank you so much for the advice and for the video reference! It will be of great help to make the corrections. I will add a link to the video on the artist's comment for others to use it as well.

Well if you think about, it says catwalk so it's most likely a model that's walking... and they wear high heals, which is basically them walking on their toes
I could be overthinking it though XD

Gosh! That looks very complicated :S
How do you know how each circle has to move? Especially the the middle circle which moves in a lying-8 trail.

If you observe anything that moves in nature, you will notice that most of the times the movement trails have these kind of curvy, smooth shapes, so I  tried to do the same with each of the movement guides, none of them suddenly change direction, they follow some kind of curve. To know how each guide should behave, I try to picture the movement in my head as clearly as possible and then animate the guides, if it's not clear enough, I look for video references and study the movement, then try again. I rarely look at a reference while making the animation, just use what I can remember, I do this as a way to train the mind to create it's own unique motions out of a combination of memories.

I guess it's especially at the beginning a very time consuming process, right?
Do you generally look rarely at references? Since I want to use just my imagination it would be pretty interesting to know.

It's more time consuming if it's a kind of movement that I'm not used to animate or can't relate to anything else, however, many of the most of the complex movements can be broken down into very basic shapes of movement trails, for example that "8" shape you mentioned, or regular ovals, it's almost like drawing but with time. The harder part is that sometimes those trails are not placed in 2d where they only move up or down and left or right, sometimes they are in 3d and also move towards and from the camera, the motion guides I used for the knees show this kind of behavior more clearly, their movement trail is close to a circle shape, but its in perspective, so it looks closer to an oval shape.

I encourage the use of hard referencing (even tracing) when you are starting anything, because sometimes you are not really aware of all the little details an artwork has until you try to reproduce them. After practicing a while with hard reference, you can combine your experiences and create your own artworks using a lighter reference  (using only a character design or a pose) and then you can work without reference. I didn't make this animation completely "in the dark", first I studied the previous walk cycle to know what to change for this one, so it was a pretty fresh memory.
