Animated version of: [link]

Something simple, just wanted to see if the effects work well with animations, and Im quite pleased with the result.

During the animation i was thinking of the metal gear solid games.

Dude, nice work! Yeah it's a short and relatively simple cycle of animation, but very fluid and I really like how the Jolteon looks toward the "camera" and blinks; he's very expressive! Nice job! :)

Anywho, nice work. I still like the Umbreon one better though, since there was more of a change between the original art and the sudden animation. I think this one would look better if it looked like Jolteon was simply sitting there, looking around, maybe blinking or twitching its ears once in a while, in a loop.

It was a good test. I remember how elated I was when I discovered how to use Flash filters after one of `JohnSu's deviations, and now it hard for me to not turn everything into a movie clip just because I may use a filter.

The downside of Movieclips is that they only show the first frame when you move through the timeline, so I have to do everything with Graphics, then transform some of the Symbols to Movieclips and apply the effects.

However in this kind of animations thats not a problem since its only one symbol ^^

So, you applied the filter for the number of frames on the timeline?

What I would do in a case like this is to do the animation without bothering to turn anything into a symbol (since it looks like it was drawn frame by frame), then test the unfiltered look. After it looks good, select all the frames involved in the animation (probably all of them, in this case), right-click, and select "Cut Frames". Then use [Shift]+[F8] to make a new movie clip, and in that clip, paste the frames. Go back to the main timeline, bring out that clip from the library, apply the filter(s), and voila. An animation on a single frame.

I generally would do this if I was, say, making a movie and did a custom animation for an object, then realize I either want it filtered or want it used again; I can simply cut the frames from the timeline, put them in a new clip, and put the new clip back in the timeline on the same spot. If you need a reference to where it ends up in case of something moving, you can copy the frames instead of cutting them and place the new clip on a different layer, which also helps to line it up to where you want it.

I actually do something like that. I draw all the fbf on the main timeline, then transform the frames to a symbol and then apply the effects :)

I just would like that flash let you see a movieclip animation when you move through the main timeline, I know its not necessary but it would be really helpful! >.<

That actually seems quite different. In your case, you're making x number of symbols that all have filters rather than a single movie clip with one filter. In a small animation like this it doesn't matter much, but in the long run it probably eats up more memory. Plus, you only have to modify the filter once rather than re-applying it for each frame.

I think the reason flash only shows the first frame of the movie clip is because you could stop on that clip's frame via AS, in which it would still animate. If you had more lines of AS that allowed the movie to continue at will, the continuation of the movie clip would be inaccurate. If you want to see what the clip looks like in motion, you're just gonna have to stick with [Ctrl]+[Enter].

Yup thats what Im doing, theres an extension of flash that allows you to select the frames and automatically transform them into a single symbol which is placed where the frames were, its a really time saver tool ^^

Yeah... I wish Graphic symbols had filters though because, unlike Movieclips, they do change through the timeline :XD:

I was trying to mimic the quality of some animes, i just forgot to add the solid shadows on the frames and maybe coloring the lines, but that depens on the style.

I wasnt sure if "cellshading" was the name for that kind of shading because i have only heard that people use it on videogame graphics XD

Sooo yeah, thats what i meant ^^

Well shading shading the the solid shading which is just dark and light :P And yes, videogames use it a lot. Ken Sugimori uses it for Pokémon all the time. :]!

They dont count because the characters move only in 2D, the shadows are almost in the same place all the time XD
If I want to learn cell shading I need to understand how the light moves around the body in 3D movements, the shapes and their depths.
I guess I will start drawing cell shaded characters with different poses, cell shaded animation would be really time taking right now, first I need to earn some experience and become faster @_@; :XD:
